Protesters slam Russia policy on Ukraine crisis

Thousands of Russians have held a protest rally in Moscow to denounce the Kremlin’s policy toward the crisis in Ukraine.

Demonstrators on Sunday took to the streets in capital city of Moscow to condemn what they called Russia’s involvement in the conflict.

Waving flags and chanting slogans, the protesters demanded the Russian government help to ease the tension in Ukraine’s east, where a military operation by Ukrainian government has been underway since mid-April.

The protesters also raised concerns over the imposed sanctions by the US and the EU against Russia, saying they might hit the country’s economy in the near future.

Organizers said thousands of protesters are expected to take to the streets in Moscow on Sunday in the first major anti-war rally since the conflict broke out in Ukraine almost five months ago.

Ukraine’s mainly Russian-speaking regions in the east have witnessed deadly clashes since Kiev launched military operations to silence the pro-Russian protesters there. According to reports, More than 2,700 people have been killed in the conflict.

Kiev and Western powers accuse Moscow of masterminding the conflict and of sending troops to back anti-government forces in the region. Russian officials have repeatedly denied the accusations.

Tensions in eastern Ukraine have heightened after the Crimean Peninsula was integrated into the Russian Federation following a referendum in March.

Washington has imposed harsh sanctions on Moscow over its alleged involvement in the crisis in Ukraine, targeting economic sectors and senior Russian government officials. The European Union, which has close trade ties with Russia, has been also under pressure from the US to follow suit.

‘They’ll ridicule us’: Ukraine defense minister ‘claims’ Russia used nukes Image from

A reported claim by Ukraine’s Defense minister that Russia used tactical nuclear weapons against his troops sparked sarcastic comments from Moscow and criticism from the rival Ukrainian Interior Ministry.

The allegations, by Col. Gen. Valery Geletey, were first reported by Roman Bochkala, one of the Ukrainian journalists accompanying the minister in his recent trip to Poland.

“So Russia did use tactical nuclear weapons against Ukrainian troops,” the journalist wrote on his Facebook page, citing Geletey’s words.

The nuclear weapons in question are rounds for 2S4 Tyulpan self-propelled mortars. The journalist reported the minister as saying that Russia supplied some of those to rebel forces and used at least two 3-kiloton nuclear rounds in the battle for Lugansk airport.

“If it were not for the Tyulpans, we could have been holding the airport for months and nobody would have ousted us from it,” the general was cited as saying.

The allegations understandably provoked a small media storm in Ukraine and even comments from the Russian Defense Ministry, which expressed doubt that a general could actually have said it.

If the minister did say all that, the Russians joked, then “the Ukrainian security service should investigate what the Polish friends slipped into Geletey’s glass.”

“Speaking seriously, Geletey’s habit of justifying the failures of the punitive operation in southeastern Ukraine with the alleged actions of the Russian armed forces start to resemble paranoia,” the Russian ministry added.

And ever-sarcastic Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, who supervises Russian defense and security, tweeted a picture of Geletey with his hands stretched out saying: “they nuked us with a bomb this big.”

The West is exploiting the Ukraine conflict in a deliberate bid to force Vladimir Putin out of power, Moscow claims.

This is the real aim of US policy, but the attempt will backfire, warned former FSB secret service chief Sergei Stepashin, who preceded Putin as prime minister.

In an open letter to Barack Obama – amid a fragile ceasefire in Ukraine – he accused the US president of ‘propaganda’ in blaming Russia for the violence in Ukraine and claiming Moscow threatens its neighbours.
